History

The WeCAN Early Intervention Programme was developed in 2004 as a Key Component of Project Platinum.

Focus of Project Platinum
Close gaps in service delivery for people with autism from cradle to grave Integrate people (especially students) with autism into the mainstream community Develop a world class autism-specific Centre of Excellence in Singapore and the region Establish an integrated education complex for the whole range of people with autism

In the EIP area, the Gap was identified as:

High numbers of children not having access to early intervention services
High demand for specialist services with long wait lists
Insufficient qualified manpower (teachers and therapists) to deliver services
Resource limitations
Lack of co-ordinated intervention approaches

Through generous research and development funding from a number of key donors, the 2-year programme was launched with the aim of developing a scalable package of intervention options for young children with autism and their families.

The WeCAN EIP Program has provided intensive, planned and systematic autism intervention since early 2004.
