History

The WeCAN Early Intervention Programme was developed in 2004 as a Key Component of Project Platinum.

Focus of Project Platinum
  • Close gaps in service delivery for people with autism from cradle to grave
  • Integrate people (especially students) with autism into the mainstream community
  • Develop a world class autism-specific Centre of Excellence in Singapore and the region
  • Establish an integrated education complex for the whole range of people with autism
In the EIP area, the Gap was identified as:
  • High numbers of children not having access to early intervention services
  • High demand for specialist services with long wait lists
  • Insufficient qualified manpower (teachers and therapists) to deliver services
  • Resource limitations
  • Lack of co-ordinated intervention approaches

Through generous research and development funding from a number of key donors, the 2-year programme was launched with the aim of developing a scalable package of intervention options for young children with autism and their families.

The WeCAN EIP Program has provided intensive, planned and systematic autism intervention since early 2004.
