Achievements

The WeCAN Early Intervention model is a comprehensive autism consultancy, training and service delivery model.

The following four key components have been developed to creatively champion the needs of key stakeholders, namely youngsters with autism, their family carers, teachers & therapists, and programme administrators.

Component 1 - Training & Consultancy

WeCAN is the top autism-training provider in Asia. Since its inception in 2000, we have offered more than 10,000 training seats to professionals, families, and organisations.

WeCAN training programmes are available in many user-friendly formats. There are two hour, half day or full day formats in the form of lectures, workshops, application forums and learning circles, depending on the target audience and subject matter.

Our consultants come with a wealth of local and overseas hands-on and academic credentials. Within EIP the focus for consultants has been on developing practical outcomes that directly affect key members of the autism community – namely the individual with autism, their carers and the professional team.

Component 2 - Operating System
WeCAN early intervention programme has developed a scalable operating model inclusive of:

  • Human Resource management (staff organisation, ratios, job scopes, key performance indicators, orientation, competency standards)
  • Financial (budget, set-up costs, program fees)
  • Physical Set-up (construction of the building, physical set-up, furniture & equipment)
  • Operating Schedules
  • Communications (internal & external)
Component 3 - Intervention Processes

WeCAN early intervention services were developed to meet the challenge of supporting and teaching young children with autism with different skills, abilities and needs.

1. Base School

The WeCAN Early Intervention Programme (WeCAN EIP) runs a base school at No. 6 Ang Mo Kio street 44.

Housed together with the Autism Resource Centre (S)’s other services, the base school functions as a laboratory training centre both for teachers, parents and children with autism.

The aim is to develop a scalable curriculum that can be used by young children with autism in Singapore and beyond.

2. Satellite Model

The Autism Resource Centre (S)’s WeCAN Early Intervention Programme (WeCAN EIP) began a pilot project with PAP Community Foundation (PCF) Headquarters in 2006 to run satellite programmes at 3 PCF mainstream preschools.

This satellite model aims to:
  • Support the learning of young children with autism in their mainstream learning environment
  • Provide mainstream teachers and parents of the child with increased autism awareness and knowledge
  • Provide mainstream teachers and parents with some basic competencies in classroom management of the student with autism.
Component 4 - Accreditation

WeCAN EIP has undertaken to participate in an accreditation process working on core and specialist standards in autism early intervention. The success of the accreditation process will rely heavily on the involvement of staff and their initiative in working on International Accreditation Standards.
