Working with professionals

Each family's experience with autism is different, depending on the needs of the child and family. Due to the nature and complexity of autism, a strong multi-disciplinary team approach is required at the early intervention level. The intervention team will be formed in response to priority needs and available resources.

The autism intervention team will routinely include:

  • Teachers
  • Caregivers
  • Speech language therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Psychologists
  • Paediatrician

Features of a strong, collaborative early intervention team include:

  • Frequent opportunities for the exchange of information among members of the team
  • A consistent understanding of autism
  • A consistent intervention philosophy
  • Focus in intervention using the IEP format
  • Continuity and consistency across settings
  • Open sharing of suggestions, techniques and materials
