No two children with ASD will have the same learning style or learning support needs. In general, people with autism routinely experience learning challenges such as:
Organisational difficulties
Distractibility
Challenges with sequencing
Difficulties in generalisation
Limitations in social communication skills
Uneven patterns of learning strengths and weaknesses
The child with ASD will require carers and teachers to understand, support and teach him skills in a consistent manner.
But this is not all of the picture!
People with autism usually have many learning strengths and positive characteristics as well. For example, they may:
Have precise and powerful memories
Be strongly visual
Be able to associate learning to the context in which it is taught
Have single-minded attention and great passion for what is important to them
Be very loyal, frank, and honest
Our job is to seek to understand each student's learning needs, challenges, preferences and strengths, and work with them in a way that is personally meaningful.
